Gardeners Hoxton Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Hoxton is committed to providing professional gardening services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and arrangements we follow to manage risks associated with gardening, grounds maintenance and related activities across our service area.
Our aim is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective controls. We will review this policy regularly to ensure it remains suitable for the type of gardening work we carry out, including residential gardens, shared communal spaces and managed outdoor areas.
Policy Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Gardeners Hoxton rests with the company management. Management is responsible for providing the resources, equipment, information and supervision necessary to maintain safe working practices.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing this policy on site, communicating safe systems of work, and monitoring that gardeners follow agreed procedures. They must ensure that work is planned and organised to minimise risk, particularly where heavy machinery, working at height or manual handling is involved.
All gardeners and workers have a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate protective clothing and report hazards, near misses, accidents or unsafe conditions without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We will identify and assess risks arising from our gardening activities before work begins and as conditions change. This includes assessing risks associated with power tools, sharp tools, slips and trips, working on uneven ground, exposure to the weather, working near roads and paths, and handling green waste.
For each job, work will be planned to minimise risk. Where necessary, we will put in place specific safe systems of work, for example when using powered cutting equipment, operating lawn machinery, working at height using ladders, or working in confined or overgrown spaces.
We will avoid high-risk methods where reasonably practicable and will always consider safer alternatives. Control measures will be communicated to all workers on site and must be followed at all times.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Hoxton will ensure that all workers are provided with appropriate information, instruction and training so they can carry out their tasks safely and competently. This includes training in the correct use of tools and machinery, safe manual handling, safe storage and use of substances, and the use and care of personal protective equipment.
Where particular skills or certifications are required for certain machinery or tasks, we will ensure these are obtained and maintained, and that only competent persons are assigned to such work. New staff will be inducted into our safety arrangements before they begin work, and ongoing refresher training will be provided as needed.
Supervision will be proportionate to the level of risk and the experience of staff carrying out the work. Less experienced gardeners will be closely supervised until they are deemed competent to work more independently.
Equipment, Tools and Personal Protective Equipment
All tools and machinery used by Gardeners Hoxton will be suitable for their intended purpose and maintained in safe working order. Equipment will be inspected regularly and any defects will be reported, recorded and rectified before further use.
Personal protective equipment will be provided where required by the nature of the task. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, high visibility clothing, and respiratory protection where appropriate. Workers must use the protective equipment provided and report any damage or loss immediately.
Safe storage and transport arrangements will be in place for all equipment, ensuring that tools and machinery do not present hazards to workers, clients or the public when not in use.
Use of Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
Where gardening work requires the use of chemicals, fertilisers or other hazardous substances, Gardeners Hoxton will ensure that these are assessed and controlled in line with current regulations and best practice. Only trained and authorised personnel may handle or apply such substances.
We will use the least hazardous products that achieve the desired result and will avoid chemical use whenever practical alternatives are available. Substances will be stored in secure containers, clearly labelled, and kept away from children, pets and the public.
Instructions on safe handling, application rates, disposal and emergency measures will be followed at all times. Appropriate protective equipment will be worn when handling or applying any hazardous substances.
Working Environment and Public Safety
Gardeners Hoxton will plan work to minimise disruption and risk to clients, neighbours and passers-by. Work areas will be organised to keep routes clear, avoid trip hazards and control access where necessary.
Where work is carried out in shared or publicly accessible spaces, we will use warning signs, barriers or cones as appropriate to warn of hazards such as moving machinery, open excavations, falling debris or slippery surfaces. Vehicles will be parked and loaded safely to reduce risk to pedestrians and other road users.
We will take account of weather conditions and will adapt or postpone work if conditions, such as high winds or storms, make tasks unsafe, particularly when working at height or using electrical equipment outdoors.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health involving Gardeners Hoxton personnel must be reported promptly to management. We will investigate these events to identify underlying causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
First aid provisions will be available during gardening operations, and workers will be briefed on how to obtain assistance in the event of an emergency. Where appropriate, at least one member of the team on site will hold suitable first aid training.
Emergency procedures will be established and communicated for foreseeable situations, such as serious injury, contact with chemicals, fire, or the need to evacuate an area. Workers are expected to cooperate with these procedures at all times.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
Gardeners Hoxton is committed to continually improving health and safety performance. We will review this policy on a regular basis and whenever there are significant changes in our activities, equipment, legislation or industry guidance relevant to gardening and grounds maintenance.
Feedback from workers and clients is welcomed and will be considered as part of our ongoing efforts to maintain safe, tidy and well managed gardening services throughout our operating area. By working together, we aim to create outdoor spaces that are not only attractive and functional, but also safe for everyone who uses or enjoys them.
